Gas, Fertiliser Industrial Zone Opens In Ca Mau

CA MAU (VNS) — The US$2 billion Ca Mau Gas-Power-Fertiliser industrial zone was officially inaugurated in the southernmost province's U Minh District.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, general director of the National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) Do Van Hau said that the opening of the industrial zone would have a great impact on the southwestern region as well as the whole country.

"It will contribute to economic development and ensure social welfare and security in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta in general and in Ca Mau province in particular," Hau said.

The construction of the 200-ha industrial zone was approved by the Prime Minister in 2001 with an aim to effectively exploit the country's natural resources as well as ensure food and energy security.

The Ca Mau Gas-Power-Fertiliser Industrial Group includes PM3–Ca Mau Gas Pipeline, Ca Mau 1 and 2 Power Plants, and the Ca Mau Fertiliser Factory together with support infrastructure, resettlement areas and new urban areas.

Of those, the $900 million Ca Mau Fertiliser Factory is the largest project with a designed capacity of 800,000 tonnes of urea per year. It is expected to supply fertiliser for agricultural production in the Mekong Delta region.

During the construction of the project, the management board invested more than VND400 billion (over $19 million) to build resettlement areas, rural transport projects, schools and houses for the local community. — VNS
