Hundreds of Agribank account holders on April 26 complained about losses of money as they received text messages about cash withdrawals though they conducted no transactions, Lao Dong newspaper reports.
The owners of about 400 hacked accounts along with 10 staff of Nhan Dan TV channel lost about VND10-20 million each within minutes.
Mai Huyen, an employee of Hanoi-based Nhan Dan TV, said she and 10 co-workers found some money had disappeared from their accounts at Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Agribank) on the evening of April 25. After the text messages arrived, the victims promptly asked Agribank to close their accounts.
Agribank informed all the staff of Nhan Dan TV that their accounts had been closed by 10:00 p.m. on April 25. However at 11:30 p.m. Huyen received new text messages showing that an extra VND24 million had been withdrawn eight times from her account.
After withdrawing the remaining money from her account, Huyen informed her co-workers of the situation and urged them to take their money out of their accounts.
Cu Anh Tuan, deputy head of Agribank marketing division, attributed the incident to hacking attacks, saying that the bank had asked the police to probe the incident.
