The mantra “children are the future of the country” is frequently repeated, more so during June this year as it was chosen as the National Action Month for Children 2020. Action programmes have been initiated for the good of children by many stakeholders, but the approach taken by generali Vietnam is peculiar: targeting parents.
Generali Vietnam and the National Fund for Vietnamese Children have jointly launched The Human Safety Net via the educational programme “Sinh Con, Sinh Cha” in late June to promote the importance of parental roles and provide knowledge to help parents fulfill their roles.
The community educational programme was introduced, targeting parents with children aged 0 6 years. The project seeks to provide them with parenting knowledge, experience and skills to help their children grow to their full potential in the love of the family. It also extends its reach to the community with practical and useful content via creative and interesting formats.
The first workshop was organised in the northern province of Bac Giang on June 23, which will be followed soon by other events on a monthly basis in six other provinces, in both the central and southern parts of Vietnam later this year.
The workshop in Bac Giang, part of the life insurer generali Vietnam’s corporate social responsibilty (CSR) programme, attracted over 500 parents, kindergarten staff and children. On the occasion, generali Vietnam offered gifts to 200 disadvantaged kids and 30 special gifts in cash and in-kind to 30 needy families from the local communities in Bac Giang.
“The inaugural “Sinh Con, Sinh Cha” workshop takes place right on the occasion of the National Action Month for Children and Vietnamese Family Day, which aims to promote the messages of child protection and child care as well as the values of family relations. We are very pleased to see the children’s bright smiles and the parents’ great interests in the workshop,” noted Tina Nguyen, generali Vietnam CEO at the workshop. The company’s leader, however, declined to reveal the cost of the entire programme.
The idiom “Sinh con, Sinh cha” literally means children are born before their parents, while grandchildren are born before their grandparents. It thus tells about the creation of parental and grandparental roles upon the birth of a child. In their new roles, parents will continue to “grow together with their children”, says Tina Nguyen.
From now until the year’s end, at least 2,000 parents and children under six, and about 400 kindergarten teachers and officers from cities and provinces across Vietnam are expected to benefit from the programme. In addition, it targets to reach millions more via digital platforms, with online sitcom airing on YouTube and Facebook starting this July.
“The programme aims to promote the importance of parental roles as well as the necessary know-how to fulfill these roles to parents across the country. The programme will also contribute to the realisation of generali’s strategy of “Becoming a Lifetime Partner” to Vietnamese families,” she explained.
Hoang Van Tien, director of the National Fund for Vietnamese Children (NFVC), a state organisation under the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, noted that many parents in Vietnam still lack the necessary skills to take good care of their children, leading to child violence and abuses that impede the children’s comprehensive development.
“Such reality brings the NFVC and generali Vietnam together to jointly develop and carry out a programme that aims to equip parents, grandparents and guardians of children under six with essential parenting skills. “Sinh Con, Sinh Cha” was conceived out of a desire to help and support parents and guardians through sharing knowledge and skills in the areas of child health, education and protection,” he stressed.
In its first edition, the programme focuses on three topics of health, behaviors and intelligence of children under 6. The contents will be delivered via an online sitcom series, in which merited artist Xuan Bac, NFVC’s goodwill ambassador, is involved in directing and acting. Local workshops will also be organised in selected kindergartens across Vietnam. Programme booklets and online sitcoms will be available free of charge while parents will enjoy free admissions to all parenting workshops.
“Sinh Con, Sinh Cha” is part of The Human Safety Net, a generali Group’s global movement initiated in 2017. The Human Safety Net’s families programme supports parents in the first six years of their children’s life to lay the strongest possible foundations for their future, contributing to early childhood development in disadvantaged communities around the world. In Vietnam, the local programme is developed by NFVC and generali Vietnam, referencing Unicef’s materials.
Attending to the wellbeing of children has been a joint effort by NFVC and generali Vietnam over the past several years. The two sides have joined hands to support the community since 2016 with the scholarship programme “Your Companion to School” benefiting students in hardship. As of June 2020, the programme has granted 3,000 scholarships to disadvantaged students across Vietnam and is being carried out in continuation.
