Banks Warn Customers About Fake Websites

Major banks are warning people not to be fooled by fake websites designed to steal account holders’ cash.

Vietnam Commercial Bank (Vietcombank) says it has noticed a number of fraudulent transactions in recent weeks.

The bank is also warning about a website, homebank24/7.com, which has a similar look and design to the bank’s own page.

Vietcombank insists this has nothing to do with their company, and advises they only have one official site, www.vietcombank.com.vn

Meanwhile, the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) is also warning about a similar fake website, homebank247.com/Bidv/.

Ngo Tran Vu, CEO of Nam Truong Son Security Company, said this was a hacker trick to get customers to handover passwords and token transfers.

Hackers would send a messenger or email to the user’s mailbox asking for internet banking password change for security reasons.

Internet banking users should check the correct bank website before logging in and always check with the bank’s switchboard to verify if they have suspicions over any emails, he said.

Customers should change their password immediately if they suspect they may have been the victim of a scam or contact BIDV for assistance, said Vu.

The Vietnam Bank for Industry and Trade (VietinBank) also warned customers not to access and log in accounts at websites that pretend to be their website such as thanhtoanfacebook.com or vietinbanking.tk

Vietinbank also advised customers to restrict the use of public computers and public wireless networks when logging on to e-banking services.

In August 2016, a customer of Vietcombank reported the loss of about half a billion dong despite not making any transactions. After checking, the bank said that this customer accessed the fake Vietcombank website.
