Bank Deposits Increase Fast In 2019

According to statistics from Q3/2019 financial statements of 27 banks, by September 30, the total deposits of customers at these banks reached more than 5.7 quadrillion dong, increased by 10 percent compared to early 2019. The differentiation growth of deposit mobilisation at banks was evident; there were some banks with very high increase but also some places of decline.

In terms of absolute increase, the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank) was the bank that mobilised the most deposits from customers in the first nine months. By the end of September, customers’ deposits at this bank exceeded 900 trillion dong, an increase of 100.2 trillion dong compared to the beginning of the year. Following Vietcombank was Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) with a rise of 95.127 trillion dong, Sai Gon Thuong Tin Commercial Joint Stock Bank (Sacombank) of nearly 50 trillion dong, Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade (Vietinbank) of almost 40 trillion dong, and so on.

Meanwhile, in terms of growth rate (%), Vietnam International Commercial Joint Stock Bank (VIB) was the most notable name. On September 30, customers’ deposit reached 113.717 trillion dong, increased by 34 percent year to date, and notably in Q3 increased by 15%. Not only that, valuable papers issued by the bank including certificates of deposits increased by 50 percent to over 15.2 trillion dong.

Other banks with very high deposit growth rate (over 20%) included Vietnam Prosperity Joint-Stock Commercial Bank (VPBank) (rose by 20.3%), Maritime Bank Securities Joint Stock Company (MBS) (rose by 21.7%), Nam A Commercial Joint Stock Bank (Nam A Bank) (increased by 20.6%), National Citizen Commercial Joint Stock Bank (NCB) (increased by 23.7%). Observations show that these are all banks with high mobilising interest rates in the market.

However, not every listing high interest rates would easily attract people to deposit. Many other banks had the highest interest rates, but the deposit growth was quite low, for example, Viet Capital Commercial Joint Stock Bank (Viet Capital Bank) only increased by 2.2%, An Binh Commercial Joint Stock Bank (ABBank) only increased by 1.3%.
